A. Don't rely on the Internet
It's a different world now! Remember that demand is down and
the competition for jobs has dramatically increased. Just posting
your resume on one of the major career sites will not result in a
quick response, even if you have a technical background. Job
posting sites like Craig's List attract large numbers of applicants
for each available position.
The ease of conducting a successful job search on the Internet,
while never a sure thing, has now become an illusion. For all of
the Internet's great value as a source of information, the net still
can't touch person-to-person networking, especially in a reces-
sion. Remember that the best way to convey who you are and
what you offer is through someone else. Start networking! Get on
the phone!
B. Don't take a passive approach
Responding to job ads in newspapers, newsletters and magazines,
even professional publications, with a mailed or e-mailed cover
letter and resume constitutes a "passive" approach to finding a
job. It does not work well during good times. During recessionary
times, forget it. Remember that up to 80% of total job advertise-
ments never find their way into print. That 80% is also where the
really good jobs are. Take a proactive approach.
