o you want to make a major career
change and can't seem to get
started? Have you been looking

You may be suffering through a career "transi-
tion." Any major change in our lives includes a period of adjust-
ment to the new situation. That psychological process is called a
transition. While the actual change is external, our response is
internal. It can be set in motion by events such as the loss of a
job, especially involuntarily; a change of career direction; a trau-
matic event at work; a reorganization; or a takeover and introduc-
tion of a new corporate culture. Transition symptoms encompass a
broad range of behavioral conditions, including indecisiveness,
procrastination and depression. The first step towards reasserting
self-control is recognizing the situation. The next step is doing
