KEEPING BABIES HAPPY
Using the biologically-based baby care practices described in
this book (holding your baby as much as possible and responding
immediately when she cries, breastfeeding frequently, keeping
your baby close during sleep, and giving your baby sufficient
social stimulation) will greatly increase the likelihood that your
baby will be highly content and will not cry for prolonged periods.
However, there are situations in our society in which even babies
raised using these methods sometimes cry for long periods or
have colic (which is commonly described with the "Rule of
3's"--baby crying intensely more than three days a week, for
more than three hours, for more than three weeks in a month,
without an obviously identifiable medical reason). This chapter is
designed to address common causes of crying and
provide effective resources for parents to identify and solve the
reason for their babies' unhappiness.
It can often be useful, particularly as a new parent, to have a
list in mind of the most common reasons babies cry. This enables
you to go through the list as a routine until you get to better know
your baby and are able to more quickly figure out what she needs.
An example of a checklist is:
·
Hungry
·
Wants to nurse/suck even if not hungry
·
Wants to be held
