Values, beliefs and perspectives
Networking in volunteer organisations could involve your interaction with
people who come from a variety of cultural and social backgrounds who possess a
range of differing beliefs, values and viewpoints. These factors will influence the
purpose of networking, how much information is shared and the amount of time
needed to establish relationships and trust.
You may volunteer in an organisation that exposes you to people who have a
range of values and perspectives that you do not agree with. This may be very
challenging for you, however, you will need to understand and accept others'
values and not judge them.
Values are `the things of social life (ideals, customs, institutions etc)
towards which the people of the group have an effective regard'
(Macquarie Dictionary, 2nd edn, 1991).
