European Regional Development Fund
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is another of the European
Structural Funds. In England ERDF is managed by the Department of
Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR).
The ERDF was established in 1975 with the aim of stimulating economic
development in the EU's least prosperous regions. As the membership of the
EU has grown, the ERDF has developed into a major instrument for helping
to redress regional imbalances in the Community by participating in the
development and structural adjustment of regions whose development is
lagging behind and in the economic and social conversion of regions.
In 1999 the regulations governing all of the Structural Funds were negotiated
for programmes starting in 2000 and lasting for seven years. They have three
Objectives (see ESF above). The first two objectives are relevant to ERDF.
·
1.9 billion Euro (£1.2 billion) is available for English Objective 1 areas.
·
3.4 billion Euro (£2.1 billion) is available for English Objective 2 areas.
