Internships Provide Valuable Clinical Experience
arena. This year she juggled a challenging
professional feat. She continued as a case
manager while completing her Johns Hopkins
clinical internship at Fox Chapel Elementary
School under Sandy Boynton, LCSW-C. "Addy
did an outstanding job and handled some very
difficult cases," Sandy announced at the
intern graduation ceremony. "She was very
independent and always had a positive
approach to solving problems."
Rachel Hale, an MSW intern from the
University of Maryland, learned that a middle
school counseling suite can sometimes feel
like an emergency room. Rachel learned first
hand that today's children are struggling with
some very serious mental health issues. She
assisted her mentor, Fiorella Berta, LGSW, in
counseling a number of high-risk students at
Gaithersburg Middle School. "It was pleasing
to see that Rachel ended her internship by
helping a family in a very significant way,"
said Fiorella.
Kara Lowinger, a social work student at
Washington University in Missouri, was lured
to GUIDE by its innovative programming.
Kara gained clinical experience in both
GUIDE's Youth Services Program and its
School Mental Health Program at Rosemont
Elementary. GUIDE was so pleased with
Kara's good work that she was hired before
she received her MSW degree. Kara is
bilingual in Spanish and served in the Peace
Corps.
The GUIDE Linkages internship was an
important clinical experience. "GUIDE is a
very nurturing place," noted the former
paratrooper and intern Joel Lightfoot.
"That's why I love you guys."

Again through collaboration with MCPS, the
school gym at Gaithersburg Middle School
was opened for the children to use for
physical activities such as kickball, jump
rope, dodge ball, and basketball. On the
final day, the children were taken to Seneca
Creek State Park, a local park, where they
feasted on pizza, watermelon, and cake and
played outdoor games. The children became
fast friends and each left with a
"Certificate of Completion" and parting
gifts to remember the fun they had and the
friends they made. All look forward to

addition, three volunteers, Max Styles, Zach
Styles, and Catalina Zubiate, also assisted
with the Summer Fun Program and earned
Student Service Hours.
Activities included crafts such as creating and
painting picture frames, decorating
bookmarks and door hangers, and coloring
feeling boxes. The children also enjoyed
playing board games, including Scrabble,
Uno, and checkers. A local musician offered a
workshop where participants could learn
about and play several instruments. A dance
workshop was provided for the children to
learn a hip hop routine. Counselors facilitated
groups on social skills, including how to
manage anger and maintain self-esteem. The
