Mergers, acquisitions and alliances (MA & A) ­ Mergers and
acquisitions exceeded $3.195 billion worldwide in 1999. The trend is
rushing forward, and MA & A and joint venture activities are
"transforming whole industries." Examples of MA & A activity abound,
such as those of Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines, AOL and Time
Warner, Daimler-Chrysler, Vodafone and Mannesmann, and more
(Temporal, 2001, p 194).
